Beginning as a storefront space on Rockwell Avenue fifteen years ago, Woman Made Gallery was conceived by two artists, Beate Minkovski and Kelly Hensen, who were recent graduates from Northeastern Illinois University. Today WMG, located at 685 N. Milwaukee Avenue, holds thirteen group exhibitions and twelve solo exhibitions each year, providing show space for approximately 400 artists annually. In honor of the gallery’s fifteenth year, Co-Founder and Executive Director, Minkovski invited jurors of previous group exhibitions at Woman Made to show their works. The 15th Anniversary Exhibition will be held from August 3rd to the 30th and is free and open to the public. Participating artists include: Faith Ringgold, Barbara Crane, Joyce Owens, Mary Stoppert, Pearl Hirshfield, Laurie Hogin, Riva Lehrer, Marva Pitchford Jolly, Indira Freitas Johnson and Eleanor Spiess-Ferris.
Woman Made Gallery supports and cultivates the diverse contributions of women artists through exhibitions, educational programs and community outreach. Through programming which examines the female experience, the organization educates and serves as a forum for dialogue between artists and the community. In addition to regular art exhibitions, Woman Made Gallery supports outreach programs at a women’s treatment center, events related to The Feminist Art Project, monthly poetry readings, and the creation of an annual art and poetry datebook.
