Pattern & Decoration is a group exhibition of 35 works by 32 female and male artists. Entries were juried by Joyce Kozloff.
In her juror statement, Joyce Kozloff writes: “I have noticed a flowering of new art that appears to be descended from P&D among younger generation artists. It has its own characteristics – more intricate drawing than I remember in the past, more obsessive personal content, and often very unusual materials. Some of it is a hybrid with art based on comic books and popular culture. Some of it is unabashedly romantic. Much of it is funny and/or sexy. So this show comes at a great moment for a reevaluation of its premises, and I am very happy to have been the juror!”
About the Juror: Born in Somerville, New Jersey, Joyce Kozloff received her B.F.A. from the Carnegie Institute of Technology and M.F.A. from Columbia University. A catalogue of Kozloff’s work states, “Her well-known pattern paintings of the mid-1970s derive from the decorative traditions of non-Western cultures, while her subsequent public art projects interpret the visual history and styles of regional cultural artifacts in shimmering mosaic and hand-painted tile.” Kozloff’s public art emphasizes the cultural history of the region and suggests the community’s heritage.
Since the early 1990s, cartography has been a source for Kozloff’s work in many media. Maps and globes have provided a structure for the layering of meaning, and a vehicle
