Seeing Seeds Drawing & Printmaking Workshop From Clay With Sharon Bladholm

Saturday, April 18 | 10 AM to 1 p.m. at Woman Made Gallery | Fee: $65.00

A hands-on workshop exploring the art and ecology of seeds. While creating art, participants will discuss seed diversity, seed structure and dispersal, and the importance of natural and man-made seed banks in ecological restoration.

The workshop begins with a short presentation on Seed Rain: Seed Bank, a large ceramic installation exhibited at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, and the Amazon expeditions and Chicago Botanic Garden research that inspired it.

Participants will draw from an extensive collection of real tropical and temperate seeds, then transfer their drawings onto small clay slabs, which are carved and inked to pull prints on rice paper or card stock. The card stock can even become a greeting card. Participants are welcome to bring their own seeds to work from.

Along the way, Sharon Bladholm will share fascinating seed stories — including Methuselah, a 2,000-year-old extinct date palm that sprouted from a seed found at Masada, Israel — as well as Native American seed traditions and Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK).

No art experience necessary. Seeds are a wonderfully approachable subject for all ages and backgrounds!

Provided Supply List: pencils, erasers, ink brayers, Plexi-sheets, water-based block ink, rice paper and card stock. Participants may bring their own printing paper.

Sharon Bladholm is a Chicago-based artist whose work is shaped by scientific expeditions to the Amazon and a deep engagement with nature, biodiversity, and conservation. Her art has been exhibited in museums, galleries, and plant conservatories nationally and internationally, and she facilitates Seeing Seeds workshops at botanical conferences, universities, arboretums, and in the Peruvian Amazon.
