Autobiographies group exhibition juried by Mary K. O’Shaughnessy and My Story solo exhibition of mixed media paintings by Fujiko Isomura.
Forty works from thirty-seven artists across the country will be featured in Woman Made Gallery’s Autobiographies exhibition juried Mary K. O’Shaughnessy, the owner of the Wood Street Gallery in Chicago. “I judged solely by the visceral reaction that I got from the images,” states Ms. O’Shaughnessy. “I looked for a more micro view of the art, and not a general sweeping macro one…I felt that art should contain some personal aspect of the artist’s life.” Through painting, photography, sculpture, printmaking, fabric/fiber, mixed media, and assemblage, these artists explore personal histories, family histories and memories. Each piece presents life stories in a unique and evocative manner.
Léo Lee displays a futuristic lithograph, Exit Alicia, describing her work as being “inspired from tales, which present a play between magic and reality.” Bridget Murphy views her mixed media pieces as incontrovertibly influenced by the rituals of childhood, using confession as a key metaphor. In Dress Stories she continues to explore the nature of being physically and emotionally clothed or unclothed. Juarez Hawkins bridges the gap between artistic representation and historical documentation with her quilt pieces. “The quilts are my effort to piece together, scrap by scrap, my history, a glimpse at the lives of those who came before.” Her Mama Grigsby piece was created with photos, paintings, text and fiber to present a multifaceted tapestry of familial tales.
