ARTIST STATEMENT
As an artist, I believe that silence in the face of injustice is its own form of violence. My work is driven by a need to confront the social and political realities that are too often ignored, especially those affecting people with fewer advantages, less power, and less visibility. The pieces I’ve submitted reflect different faces of the same truth: that human dignity is continually threatened by power, and that to create art in times of unrest is to take a stand. Whether honoring the invisible labor of immigrants (De Sol a Sol), exposing the devastation of war (Living Under the Ashes), or confronting the historical manipulation and corruption that shape the Global South (Al Sur), I use my work to bring attention to what is so often unseen, and to ask the viewer to stop, think, and feel. In a world where protest can be dangerous and truth is politicized, I see painting as an act of resistance through color, texture, and emotional honesty. My work doesn’t offer easy answers. It mourns, questions, and refuses to look away. I create because I must. Because telling the truth visually is the most human way I know to say: This matters.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Alexandra Rey is a Colombian-American visual artist based in Miami, Florida. Her work explores themes of memory, displacement, injustice, and resilience — often blending personal experience with broader political and social commentary. With a background in fashion design and over two decades of professional artistic practice, Rey creates both abstract and figurative pieces that are emotionally layered, textural, and unafraid to confront difficult truths. Working primarily in acrylic, oil, and mixed media, she frequently incorporates found objects, text, and collage to create visual narratives that speak to identity, power, and survival. Her work has been exhibited in both national and international exhibitions, including the Sumex XXI exhibition at the Mexican Consulate in Miami and early-career inclusion in a group show at Amsterdam Whitney Gallery in New York. Her paintings have also been published in several contemporary art books and magazines where her voice and vision stand out for their clarity, emotion, and political depth. Fluent in both English and Spanish, Rey’s work often reflects her cross-cultural identity and her commitment to using art as a form of resistance, remembrance, and emotional connection. Through color, texture, and symbolism, Rey creates works that don’t just ask to be seen — they ask to be felt.
