ARTIST STATEMENT
I am a multidisciplinary artist who examines issues of body, nakedness, sex, and queer subjectivity through painting, design and interactive sculptures. My life as a professional designer and educator has informed my practice. Working at the intersection of art and design, my work opens up questions about gender binaries and the relation between body and identity.
My research is rooted in my personal experience as a proud, yet innately challenging, queer woman artist. As someone who did not come out as queer until recently, I use my practice as a way to sort through the challenges I have faced as my identity has shifted. I currently base my practice out of Chicago, IL where I am an artist resident at the Chicago Art Department, as well as faculty in the Department of Art and Graphic Arts at McHenry County College.
My work has primarily focused on sex, womanhood and inequality but has begun to shift towards gender and sexual identities as I begin to shift my understanding of myself. Because of my practice, I am able to question my biases and long-standing understanding of womanhood. My work seeks to open up questions surrounding identity and encourage my viewers to consider where their identities originate from, whether societal or personal.
