Making porcelain ceramic jewelry is a recent and captivating endeavor for me. I find making something beautiful out of nothing—the ultimate draw of clay— mesmerizing. And to wear these beautiful objects next to my body is the ultimate in satisfaction. The repetition of geometric shapes is calming and satisfying, and I have tried to combine what I love about the material and the formal aspects of design in each piece I make. My necklaces combine multiples of shapes I have designed and finished in quiet glaze colors. Using minimal ways to hold the pieces together, I showcase the beads themselves.
My eyes are promiscuous—especially when it comes to adorning the body. I pour over books about jewelry throughout history and I wander through bazaars and souks in Africa and the Middle East to appreciate what women have worn. I see possibilities everywhere for making jewelry components in clay. The challenge is that clay pieces can break if not carefully handled. I want my jewelry’s owners to respect the properties of this material and be mindful when using it—just as they would if washing a handmade plate or jar.
