This Spring I broke up with my parents. Our relationship has always been difficult but the added strain of their unwavering belief in a cruel and pathetic leader during current events became a burden I was no longer willing to bear.

The title, “The Gift of Darkness”, comes from a poem by Mary Oliver: “Someone I loved once gave me/a box full of darkness./It took me years to understand/that this, too, was a gift.”
