With the fast spread of COVID-19 in countries distant and close, the astronomical proportion of cases and deaths in NYC and its surrounding areas, I find myself either watching the news or browsing the net to read stories of lives affected in the pandemic. Although the place where I live is relatively safe, my mind constantly drifts back to the devastating stories seen and heard. Like many, my daily routine has changed. My studio practice, if not fully disrupted, has positively taken a detour. I am constantly jotting down words I hear and read.
This series is the beginning of my COVID-19 diary. Written-on-gloves has started as a digital series to record some of these extraordinary stories, emotions, anxiety, fear, and heroism of doctors, nurses, ordinary people, suffering individuals and their loved ones. These are stories of our vulnerability and our longing for human touch and fear of touching.
The words come from stories published by news organizations and live coverage.
