Lonesome is the most direct emotional status that relates to ‘loss.’
These works stand for solitary, void, empty status in simplified form, restricted color palette and composition with lots of negative space on top of warm and natural surface with Hanji Paper. The use of Hanji Paper – Korean Traditional Handmade Paper – is a personal connection for Hyunhee Doh of revealing nature in herself, regarding the slow process of paper making and the irregular surface that comes out with natural fiber out of wood. These series of works are especially connected to Hanji Paper’s making process, in terms of how the quiet, sole and comforting ambiance of the material itself and subject matter connects to each other.
Through the choice of material and the surface, major emotion of the works, ‘lonesome’ becomes the firm subject matter of each work.
