Worldwide political unrest, elected officials who act bizarrely, frustration with the systems that have created such, my question has become: what can I, one individual, do to create positive change? Some retreat, some protest, some run for office, some write poetry, some make art. As I consider the slippery landscape and assess the tools I have to address such enormous and overwhelming challenges, intellect, imagination and images are my instruments of protest. These pieces from my series “Protection Charms” use the magical references of conjuring and invoking to inspire empowerment in myself and others who experience a disconcerting range of emotions around country, home, leadership, and responsibility.
