ARTIST STATEMENT
The tar pits of the world have been traps for animals and other life forms for over 50,000 years. For paleontologists, the pits offer a treasure trove of information on the evolution of life on earth.
The Tar Pits inspired these paintings.
I think of soup! An ominous black soup, full of the bones of ancient animals, of their stories and mysteries! I contemplate the sad fate of animals caught in the sticky stuff.
I imagine how it feels to be stuck– stuck in place, in thought, in mind-set. The tar pits as image and metaphor, were my rich source of inspiration for the paintings in this exhibition.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Bull has been an artistic nomad throughout her career, moving from one style and/or subject to another to satisfy her restless curiosity. She started out decades ago as a Photorealist, producing exquisitely convincing paintings and prints. Now, after a lifetime as an artist–and human–her work is looser, more expressive, and more interested in peeling back surfaces than in depicting them. – Steven Jupiter
