Emily Schnellbacher Bean is a soft-sculpture and installation artist with a penchant for process, a passion for color, and a fetish for fabric. She references forms and elements drawn from the natural world and the human body, each of which intermingles throughout her work creating playful moments of abstraction. Her process of sewing and handling repeated forms, each rendered in painstaking detail, reflects a meditative and craft-oriented approach to art-making.
Bean earned her BFA from Herron School of Art and Design in Indianapolis, IN with a focus on painting, art history, and psychology and an MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, PA with an emphasis on mixed-media. All play an important role in her practice today. She also teaches workshops and exhibits regularly in both group and solo shows; recent venues include N’namdi Center for Contemporary Art (Detroit, MI), Ann Arbor Art Center (Ann Arbor, MI), The Governor’s Island Art Fair (New York, NY), and The Philadelphia Sculpture Gym (Philadelphia, PA).
