CHICAGO — Woman Made Gallery (WMG) presents a body of work with commentary on the cultural history of female presentation and excessive notions of beauty by Shoshanna Weinberger. The drawings presented in potbelly pin-ups: out of many one, refer to the contemporary connections with and cultural stereotypes of historical women who have been subjugated to modern-day Hottentots.
In her statement Weinberger writes, “As an artist, I find the idea of what popular culture defines as feminine beauty to be skewed and distorted. My drawings identify with beauty psychology, both physiologically and politically. These figures are tangled, hogtied, and wearing props associated with femininity and sexuality…[They] have a sex appeal but decidedly are mutations… potbelly pinups alludes to the trappings and distortion of beauty found in prepubescent pageant toddlers, strippers, Hollywood-icons, West-Indian Dancehall performers, extreme plastic surgery, and even myself.”
