Laws of reality and reason are questioned when I embark upon the creation of a work of art. It is as though a breath of light gives each work a mystical existence. Often days pass while I unconsciously gather information and ideas for my art, then, the excitement of birthing an image in both random and planned thought emerges with a burst of vigor. Visions of ancestral origin and wonderment of the spirit world store in my mind until color and form find its way to materialize through the medium. The Spirit, then, allows me to stop time and shape reality into personal and universal metaphor.” Shahar Caren Weaver was born in Chicago in 1947, but at an early age she moved with her family to Los Angeles where she grew up. Weaver graduated from Howard University, receiving tutelage there from the late Lois Mailou Jones, Jeff Donaldson and Skunder Boghassian. Currently, Weaver resides in Chicago. She earned a Master of Divinity degree from Seabury Western Theological Seminary, and aspires to become an Episcopal priest. Her ministerial calling has enhanced her art, and, has added even more of a spiritual perspective to her multifaceted paintings, drawings and collages. Weaver has exhibited in numerous museums and galleries, and has been featured on Public Television programs where her work was shown and she was interviewed about her art. She has also executed murals at Howard University, Birmingham Municipal Airport, and the Museum of African Art at the Frederick Douglass House in Washington, DC. Shahar Caren Weaver is currently working on a book of prayers and paintings that reflect the theology and ethics of liberation and social justice.
