ARTIST STATEMENT
To learn about others we must take a look inwards. This work is a dedication to my heritage, to my people and to my ancestors. It serves to teach about my Mexican culture’s food, Picaditas. To my surprise, a lot of my Mexican friends didn’t know the term and I had the opportunity to teach them as well. De Maiz a picadita is a recipe, informational poster, tied together through my personal experience. The type includes, the Montserrat family a simple san serif font along side my own handwritten Rotulo inspired titles and 翩翩體-繁 as an additional handwritten type. Imagery relates to the objects/ingredients used in the dish and the colors are all taken from the Mexican Flag.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
My name is Noemi Taboada. I am a first generation college student, a child of two Mexican immigrant parents, and I identify as Mexican-American, Latina, queer, and use pronounce she/they. As a kid, I adored the art world and therefore couldn’t imagine working, existing even, outside of that realm. So it made sense that, when I came to Illinois State University, I didn’t seriously entertain the possibility of a major outside of the Fine Arts. I gave Graphic Design a try and quickly realized it was something I really enjoyed doing and I’ve been creating ever since. I speak Spanish fluently and hope to use the skill in future occupations, to connect with my community, and help my people indulge in the art form as I have.
