ARTIST STATEMENT
The pieces I submitted to this year’s member’s show are part of a larger series called “Existential Reflux”. It is the idea of deep or humorous existential thoughts that come bubbling up from our psyche. I created these pieces using 3 elements: a limited palette for the acrylic mono-printed backgrounds, one “character” using collage, and a string of cut/found text. When I work with cut text, I rearrange words until I feel something that resonates deeply within my own psychological experiences and thoughts.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Lydia is an imaginer, delving into the realms of mindspace and dreamspace with a deep yearning for magic in the world. In the studio, she plays and experiments with materials, embracing chaos by allowing her mind to wander freely. Her process involves layering imagery, colors, textures, and playful markings to create richly dynamic works. Lydia often incorporates cut text into her art, adding an additional dimension of ambiguous narrative that invites viewers to interpret the work in their own unique way. Her goal is to craft pieces that feel like a journey, filled with hidden gems waiting to be discovered.
Lydia believes in the transformative power of fantasy, absurdity, and surrealism. Through her art, she seeks to create connections among alternative minds, offering a space for others to find resonance in the unexplainable, the dark, or the weird.
Lydia’s hometown is Columbus Indiana, she grew up by a lake surrounded by woods, lived in England for a year, is a constant learner, and loves soup.
