ARTIST STATEMENT
Throughout history, the female body has been exploited and popularized as an “object” in artwork and mass media as well as the misogynistic and submissive undertones that come along with it. Through my work in self-portraiture, I aim to transfer this idea of the female body as an “object” of an image to the “subject” of the image. I am also interested in the idea of control and the choices that are made by the participants engaging with my work.
I create characters inspired by pop culture, tv/film, and “zoomer humor” in which I act out in front of the camera. While I do not recognize these characters as an extension of myself, I do feel as though they are a way for me to dissociate and disconnect from my life and take on the role of another woman through make believe. As well as self-portraiture in photo and video, I have also experimented with installation, both sculptural and video based.
Going beyond the individualism of the character and creating and controlling how the viewer will interact with the character is something that I have experimented with and plan on continuing to work with. I want to keep creating characters and experiences for the viewers of my work created from the perspective of a generation z female living and exploring the freedom of her body and her life while exploring the topics of feminism, sexuality, and internet culture.
