WhiteHatsPew is a photo from a body of work by the artist entitled “Amen.” This group of African American women, in a Harlem church, is more than likely known as “deaconesses.” The traditional all white uniforms have been displaced by the black and white garb, and a more contemporary crown (hat). This ceremonial garb is a mark of distinction to let all others now that they have been set aside for special work within that congregation.
