ARTIST STATEMENT
I am a mixed media artist using the sensation of story to help make sense of the world. There are multiple layers of discovery in my work. First there are the found objects that form the main construction of the work, then there are the smaller found objects and finally there are the millefiori slices of tiny designs in the polymer clay. This is an ancient glass technique which I have adapted to polymer clay. My pallet of pictures to use on my pieces is extensive as I have millefiori canes going back as far as 20 years. When I create a piece I use these slices mainly for their color and texture but when the piece is on view it becomes a treasure hunt for tiny captivating discoveries. I use wonderment as a mechanism to show the things we live with everyday in a new perspective. When you are surrounded by my polymer clay sculptures it is as if you are seeing the world through a patterned lens where the mundane is much more precious and mysterious.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Layl McDill grew up in Gillette, Wyoming where she began creating at a very young age. Her early works were dollhouses, marionettes and even an entire “Smurf Village”. Layl received her BFA in Illustration from the Columbus College of Art Design but she found it more exciting to make sculptural work and sell it through galleries and art fairs. She has exhibited her work around the country since 1994. Polymer clay has been her medium of choice using the millefiori technique and mixed media materials added. The theme of wonderment permeates her sculptures that are covered with endless details. She uses themes of animals and nature to explore the ways we interact with the environment. Her work can also be found in numerous books and publications. Volunteer work has been an important part of her life. She currently serves as the board chair of Art to Change the World. Sharing her skills as a full time artist with emerging artists has been her way of giving back. She encourages others to try art through polymer clay by teaching in person and virtually around the country
