ARTIST STATEMENT
Creating against the backdrop of a nation that has regressed to enforce shaming and blaming women while taking back control of their constitutional rights of bodily autonomy, I created works incorporating traditional printmaking, craft, and collage to tell that story. Fired up to visually express feelings experienced after reading quotes from authors of the restrictive state abortion ban laws, “women are irresponsible,” “women can control their reproductive lives by refraining from sexual intercourse,” and “women chose to engage in unprotected sex on the assumption that an abortion will be available to her later,” I felt the medium of collage with traditional printmaking would engage the viewer in multiple interpretive possibilities.
