Joan McLane

I paint in oil, incorporating threads, pieces of fabric and cold wax medium. I experiment with line, color, texture to create forms, often figurative, that exist and move in fluid, ambiguous spaces. I explore aspects of movement, particularly of figures in and on the edge of space: figures are in flight, or on the verge of flight, leaping, hovering precariously. The relationship between figures and the spaces they inhabit is open to multiple interpretation: tension, anxiety, exhuberance, freedom and play.
