As a social justice artist, in my studio work and community murals, the subject that often comes to mind is choice. As someone who is old enough to remember life before Roe v. Wade, it is, alas, once again pre-eminent in my work, as these images attest. I am inspired by work as diverse as early Italian painting and the work of Betye Saar, and in this case, Simone Martini’s Annunciation. I hope my work will suggest conversations—both internal and with others—about the interaction of formal issues and narrative content. Artists are here to disturb the peace.
