ARTIST STATEMENT
I am drawn to collage because it breaks the rules. At the heart of my practice lies a fascination with breaking down and repurposing the familiar into the extraordinary. My method engages viewers in a dialogue, challenging them to process the human experience. My medium is a vehicle for confronting the delicate balance between illusion and expectations of memory. Transforming my own photography of everyday scenery and digitally created patterns into still-life tapestries, I reconsider the relationship between consumption and the complexities of perception. Drawing from the iconic Dutch 17th-century still-life paintings, which boasted extravagant possessions, I spark an exploration of the limits of the richness of experiences against the monotonous. By breaking the rules of expected aesthetics, I invite the viewer into a world where the rigid steel of a skyscraper becomes the petal of a flower, or a delightful striped pattern becomes the refreshing cocktail of a festive gathering. My fascination with these themes is rooted in personal experience, including the loss of my father to alcoholism. While a profound confrontation of mortality led me to ponder perception and the power of memory, my work considers how the mundane layers into human existence.
