ARTIST STATEMENT
Much of my work branches from a familial history of quilting and domestic arts. In “From the Heart and Hands,” I emphasize the skill of my mother, Lisa, who was a prolific quilter throughout my childhood. My mother taught me how to sew, which connected me to the history of women’s craft that I now include in my paintings and fiber work. This work serves as a bridge between media and conceptual practices, and is an ode to home and our relationship.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Chicago artist, Chloe Harthan is currently a student at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She has been exhibited in group shows in Chicago, New York City, and San Antonio. Harthan draws upon the influence of American domestic folk art and handicraft traditions. In quilting, she utilizes personal photographs to reclaim girlhood and reconfigure them through the lens of womanhood. She sees her sewing machine as a partner instead of a tool, and through a tactile connection in making, she becomes part of a wider history of women’s domestic artwork.
