M.R.E.A.M. was initiated by the passing of my Aunt Vanessa and invokes living memory of women in my family, those who have passed, are presently maternal and for those who may experience motherhood in the future. The visual history of sisterhood is rewritten by placing pictures (and distant relationships) together and forming a landscape of family portraits that reaches through generations. Rose petal decals used are from a single rose taken from a condolence bouquet at my Aunt Vanessa’s homecoming service. It imbues her maternal nurturing spirit and immortalizes her legacy. The floral components found here and in related work symbolizes the divine feminine of black womanhood and sisterhood.
