ARTIST STATEMENT
There are often many conflicting narratives of a family’s history. Whose story wins, is codified as memory, and enforced as truth is a question I confront through my art and artmaking process. My “Regrets only” series recontextualizes family photographs, clothes given to me by my estranged father, and children’s drawing materials to explore my own unresolved narratives of family, belonging, and culture.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Bosede A Opetubo is a sister artist human mother from the Bronx, NYC. Driven by her experiences as an unlikeable girlchild who thought loudly and acted wrong, she makes art as a practice of self-love for her adult and childhood selves. An interdisciplinary artist, her work often depicts quiet scenes and commonplace rituals using color, texture, personal effects and discarded materials to explore grief and motherhood, the corporate destruction of our ecosystem, and the heavy weight of childhood neglect. Bosede is also the founder of SAHMCreative, which hosts live and virtual artmaking experiences for professional and family caregivers. Embodying her belief that artmaking is a universal skill and a gateway to endless possibilities, Bosede insists, “If you can make art, you can do anything. And everyone can make art.”
