ARTIST STATEMENT
As a painter and disability advocate, I use my work to honor feminist figures who inspire me. I focus on the strength and resilience of women and nonbinary people, both those in the spotlight and those whose stories often go unnoticed. With bright colors and a pop culture style, I celebrate the power of feminism and the courage of those who push boundaries and defy stereotypes. I use my work to explore and express my experiences, transmuting adversity into a celebration of life. By turning my journey into art, I express the depth of my story, transforming challenges into vibrant, meaningful pieces that connect and inspire.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Genevieve Ramos (b. 1990) is an American painter and disability advocate whose work explores the intersections of feminism and disability through vivid acrylics and pop culture influences. Ramos discovered her passion for painting after surviving a car accident at age 20, during which she sustained a spinal cord injury. This life-changing event led her to use art as a means of healing and expression.
In 2022, Ramos co-founded Cuerpos Justificados (Justified Bodies), a cross-disability artist collective dedicated to uplifting marginalized voices. She has been fortunate to participate in several esteemed programs, including an Artist Residency with the Disability Culture Activism Lab (DCAL) in 2021, and she was honored with a 3Arts/Bodies of Work fellowship in Chicago in 2022.
Ramos earned her bachelor’s degree in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies from Northeastern Illinois University in 2021 and completed a certificate in Painting from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in early 2024. Most recently, she received the ‘Elevating Diverse Voices’ award from GoodHart residency in Michigan.
