ARTIST STATEMENT
The work by Angela McElwain presented here relates to the subject of “Invisibility” by virtue of the subject matter as well as technique; invisibility by choice, societal interference or natural causes.
“Gone to Stone the Dim Past – For Lenore” is a collage/assemblage about the invisibility of the past. The piece mimics a page from an old photo album of many decades ago featuring individuals long deceased but whose memories are pasted into the dusty heavy paper. The old school map, another outdated tool, shows significant places in the lives of those who are no longer visible.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Angela A. McElwain is a painter, sculptor, photographer, and graphic novelist whose studio is located on the northwest side of Chicago. Using oils, acrylics, collage, assemblage, and photography she makes authentic, evocative art, foraging the depths of the human experience with the expectation that the observer counter with their own response. McElwain’s powerful pieces investigate social, cultural and spiritual issues. The work very often incorporates the human form, and the dramatic use of color intensifies the visual power of each piece. Her work, stimulating and intuitive, functions as a bridge to the subconscious, demanding that the viewer emotionally engage in the work and its meaning.
