ARTIST STATEMENT
These are Mother’s Bundling; a ceramic, carbon/ink and natural fiber wall mounted sculpture. A physical manifestation of my personal experience mothering through domestic violence. Panicked and disoriented by my situation, humble tasks began to take on larger magical meaning. The endless gathering and gleaning of resources dominated each day and began to feel supernatural. Tying children’s shoes, doing and undoing knots became spells and prayers; an alchemy designed to ward off brutality and keep children safe. I imagined if one mothered well enough, a positive development would take shape. Through the tasks of forming earth and taming fire, by gleaning local plant matter, bound with natural fibers, marked forever by carbon ink, visual evidence of my experience can be seen here.
