ARTIST STATEMENT
Somewhere between noon and an hour later, I’ll hear a familiar sound at my doorbell—it’s Karissa. I’ll run downstairs to answer, but because I’m never quite ready on time, Karissa will settle into the dining table, laughing as I scurry about, searching for my elusive running shorts. Eventually, I’ll find them, and we’ll head upstairs to kick off our workout routine, always selecting a playlist from Gregg (with three g’s!). Thirty minutes later, Karissa will inevitably declare, “We should never do this again!” Yet, she’ll still be here next week. We’ll stuff our feet into our running shoes, never undoing the laces, before piling into her black car, blasting Troye Sivan at a volume that promises future hearing problems. It takes us sixteen minutes to reach the parking lot of our trail. As we get out of the car, one us will ask the question that’s become a ritual: “Do we really have to run?” But it doesn’t matter, because every Sunday, we always do.
