ARTIST STATEMENT
I work in many media to express my thoughts, feelings and concepts via the visual arts. The mini dress is a current series both in small scale and full sized wearable art garments that explore social issues. I used a child sized dress form because the issue is childhood mental health. Allowing the viewer to read the symptoms and ask questions can start a conversation with a child who may not know how to express their feelings. Some statistics are included as well. The wire hand references the 1960’s experiments with maternal bonding or the lack thereof.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
I live in Canton, Ohio and am a northeast Ohio native. My degrees are in Painting and Drawing (BFA) and Art Education (MA). For over 40 years I have been an active professional artist, community volunteer and at times a paid employee of a school system, art museum or retail display department. Those 40+ years involve different media series as I explored various ways to best express myself. As I age, I find my self spending more time on one project (perhaps for months) rather than producing many pieces for an exhibition. The realization that my children will not want any of this “stuff” or know what to do with it all is quite a wake up call. With over 160 juried shows, 20+ solo shows and a 10 page CV, I look back and wonder if anyone will really care. As long as I do, that is all that matters.
