ARTIST STATEMENT
In her Fragile Masculinity series, Suki uses primarily large-scale, abstract acrylic and mixed-media to express the deeply disturbing patterns of abuse and oppression brought on by the destructive imbalance of [predominantly] white male governed society. This medium allows the productive expression of explosive emotion while simultaneously projecting a voice for the millions of oppressed people who feel impotent in the face of a backwards moving social agenda.
For more than 20 years, Suki’s artwork has focused on the exploration of internal space and the deep emotional experiences that drive hostility and divisiveness between humans. Her work represents the invisible yet highly influential emotions responsible for the conflicts we experience both in our personal relationships and in our broader social construct.
Suki’s goal as an artist is to represent and validate the full spectrum of emotion while inspiring and encouraging others to seek productive ways to embody their own.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Suki Liebow is an award winning contemporary artist who works across multiple mediums and scales using Art as an emotional engagement tool and a platform for social activism.
In Suki’s more than 20 years of research on the impacts of trauma on human behavior and psychology, she came to understand the destructive impacts of emotional dissociation on individuals and our broader communities. Recognizing the significant need and profound absence of resources for emotional engagement, it became Suki’s primary focus to develop strategies for productive emotional engagement through the visual arts.
In addition to her own work, Suki teaches and facilitates artistic engagement to a broad range of humans, young child to seasoned adult, through art classes, workshops, and lectures. She has been a board member of multiple art-based non-profit organizations promoting public art installations, grant writing, and organizing art based programs and exhibitions.
After a traumatic period of homelessness as a young teenager and becoming a solo teen parent at 15, Suki founded her first business in her early twenties and has owned three more since. She currently lives in the San Francisco Bay Area and spends her time pondering how to save the world through art.
