Magda’s Recipes for Survival
mixed media
17 x 42 in.
‘Magda’s Recipes for Survival’ is my first piece of work that directly deals with my mother’s holocaust experiences. The techniques used are very much a part of the piece as the piece itself. I scanned my mother’s apron (from the 60’s) and incorporated excerpts from a verbatim transcript that described bread as a commodity of survival. I printed 8.5″ x 11″ sections of my mother’s tablecloth and recomposed it by sewing together. The finished piece is simple and to the point.
