ARTIST STATEMENT
Driven by intellectual curiosity, I use art to investigate the grand, surprising, and often perplexing ways our world works. Through vibrant, layered washes, I study the science behind human connection and creativity, seek to voice the language of mathematics, and puzzle over the oddities of worlds beyond sensory perception. My art plays in the spaces between logic and flow to celebrate the beauty of discovery, and it invites viewers to join the bewitching quest for understanding.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
US-based watercolor artist Zarina N Docken navigates the world with both intellectual and artistic curiosity. Born in Manila, her journey began with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics at the University of the Philippines. At the same time, theater’s allure drew her in, leading to playwriting, design, and acting. Immigrating to Chicago in the early 90s, she embarked on a career in technology before pursuing a Master’s in Design at the IIT Institute of Design.
In 2018, seeking a convenient creative medium, Zarina rediscovered watercolors. This seemingly simple medium captured her imagination, fueled by the inspiration and guidance of renowned artists like Marc Folly, Eudes Correia, Alvaro Castagnet, Keiko Tanabe and Patricia Guzman. Zarina’s work, characterized by luminous transparency and dynamic layers, has garnered recognition in national exhibitions and awards, including the 2022 International Watercolour Masters competition and Art & Color 365 magazine.
Zarina’s art strives for the seamless merging of logic and flow, a dance between analytical precision and creative chaos.
