The issues and concerns regarding the African Diaspora plays an intrinsic part in my work as a visual artist. In essence, I am interested in exploring the impact of the Diaspora on Latino culture. As a native Dominican raised in New York City, conflicting notions of identity and assimilation are unfortunately common to both native-born and American-born Dominicans. The driving force behind “El Plan” is about exploring the complexities of the Dominican identity – whose strong African origins are not embraced in its entirety when it comes to the color of your skin and hair texture.
