Advocate
acrylic and water-based spray paint
48 x 48 in.

“Advocate” is the most important word for this historical moment. Painted in 2016, while witnessing the changes happening in the world, it reflects the new “normal” (and the old normal for me). I have dedicated my life to fighting for others, and see the increased importance in these times to continue to fight for each other and find ways to for all of us to fight together. “Advocate” is also what I do everyday: from nurturing many young artists at the weekly artmaking sessions/informal salon as director of AnySquared, to making space in my studio for people to make protest posters, and working on direct social justice campaigns.

“Advocate” is part of a larger “ate my words” series utilizing words that end in “ate.”
