ARTIST STATEMENT
With an interdisciplinary approach, I aim to create paintings that transcend two-dimensional planes, offering viewers nostalgic experiences. Through the use of paint, lace, and other charming objects, I strive to explore moments of intimacy in my work. I incorporate sculptural elements and embellishments into my paintings, hoping to express the significance of the little things. I often find fulfillment in the mundane, whether within myself, my memories, or through experiences/findings in the world. By focusing on specific moments where stillness takes over and there is a possibility of them being forgotten, I examine how even inconsequential times have created my fondest memories.
In ‘Translations of Love Within a Green Doored Home,’ I painted two scenes depicting how love was expressed in my childhood home. Growing up with Korean immigrant parents, love was not always shown explicitly; however, I always knew that my mom would cut up my apples for me and pack my lunch, even when I was old enough to hold a knife and make a sandwich. My mom sliced every apple, peach, strawberry, cantaloupe, or anything I was craving with love that could not be expressed through words. Thus, I laid down every stroke of color with love and admiration.
Currently, I am embracing exploration through surfaces for my paintings. Straying away from the classic rectangular, flat canvas I hope to create pieces which resemble the fluidity of our thoughts and memories.
