clay, slip and glaze

One of my earliest pleasures was storytelling. I can hardly remember a time when I wasn’t scribbling in journals, creating fantastic worlds and odd characters. When I began creating figures in clay I discovered I wanted to begin a story that my viewer could complete.

Red Sprite began the way most of my figures begin. Coiling from the base up and working with the shifting weight of the clay. Clay has a mind of its own and a story as well. My job is to wait for it to reveal itself and honor what emerges. Red Sprite is narrative, yet enigmatic. During multiple firing and finishing processes, its story continued to unfold and change. Like all of my figures Red Sprite challenges viewers to paint their own stories, as it challenges me to allow it to speak for itself.
