ARTIST STATEMENT
Life is too short to be dull and boring!
My art practice revolves around using bold and saturated colors to punch up the world around us. In my oil paintings, I create whimsical scenes that bring joy and thoughtfulness to all that stumble upon them. My art practice is fueled by my own experiences as someone trying to giggle more and liven up their perspective of the world, where it didn’t always used to be so bright.
Finally, a Love that won’t Die! Celebrates the humor in experiencing the highs and lows of relationships in today’s dating scene. It can be so easy to go from being invested in someone, like giving them flowers, to having it all wilt and die in days. In this bouquet though, the flowers are balloons and will take much longer to lose their air as opposed to the other flowers / chocolates / romantic gestures that have since rotted away, as implied by the buzzing flies around them. So, FINALLY, we have some form of love that won’t die! (At least, not for a little bit).
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Chicago based painter Sophie Levit has always had a passion for color ever since she was a kid. She has been honing her skills in color and joyfulness in painting for the past few years, specifically reigniting her painting flame during the Covid pandemic. The Covid pandemic cast a gray light over her world as she knew it, and Sophie knew that painting would be the only thing that would physically and mentally bring color and joy back into her life.
Although Sophie obtained her BFA with a focus in graphic design from the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design in 2021, she could not settle for working from a screen and found that when she was away from her computer, the world seemingly got brighter. As someone who would take pictures and then get frustrated when the colors wouldn’t turn out as bright as they were in real life (Saturation and vibrance settings on her phone were her best friends), she knew she wanted to create art that would reflect and even brighten up the world she faced.
Her fine art experience combined with her design expertise allowed her to dive into creating exciting compositions and find her passion in painting whimsical and unconventional things that would make her smile. While Sophie has exhibited artwork at the STAMPS gallery in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Tickled Pink is her first debut as an artist in her home city of Chicago, Illinois.
