ARTIST STATEMENT
I paint the human form in relationship to nature, giving equal importance to negative and positive space. My colors and shapes reflect my West African ancestry, and the profiles in my work speak to our shared humanity. Through adjoining geometric and organic forms, I explore the interconnectedness of all living things. I believe we are one people, sustained by our respect for each other and the planet — a belief strengthened by the hope I see in younger generations.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Shirley Guay was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1943 and studied at Harold Washington College, formerly Loop College. A lifelong traveler, she has explored the United States extensively and now makes her home in rural Illinois. Guay’s work has been exhibited at the Museum of Science & Industry in Chicago and the Freeport Art Museum. Her paintings are held in the permanent collections of the Loveland Museum in Dixon, Kishwaukee College in Malta, and the Lowell High School Fine Art Collection in Indiana. She continues to share her work widely throughout the Midwest, contributing to the region’s rich artistic landscape.
