Renee Williams Jefferson, a self-taught artist, has exhibited in the Chicago area for nearly 20 years. Her cast paper and encaustic wax works integrate painting, collage and sculpture. She is intrigued by the fluidity of encaustic wax and the transformation of paper pulps to what might be viewed as stone, aged metal and clay. Inspired by natural topographical formations, desert hues, ocean colors, and organic structure, Renee encourages the viewer of her work to study it from up close and from afar. Close observation will reveal the works subtle nuances in color, texture and shape. Viewing it from afar will disclose its essence, allowing the viewer to see beyond its obvious structure and form. Renee believes her art is a gift from God and draws her creative inspiration from two themes: spirituality and self-awareness. Her encaustic works often incorporate cast and hand colored paper and fibers. Her Talking Vessels, 3-dimensional vessels some of which bear wisdom- or faith-based text, “Wall Sculptures,” “Spirit Angels,” and cast paper paintings give visual expression to these themes.
