ARTIST STATEMENT
Sarah Begay
A lifetime of tradition following a path of reciprocity between humans, non-humans and land. 40+ years ago when the U.S Government interfered in the Hopi/Navajo relationship and dictated she and other Navajo families had to leave their ancestral homes, she resisted. Her truth was that the Gods could only hear their prayers from that sacred space — moving away would break the connection. Even as an elder, despite ongoing pressure, Sarah remained steadfast and never left.
Today’s growing awareness of the need for humans to be good stewards of the land isn’t a new concept. Native cultures have understood reciprocity for millennia. I’m hopeful traditional knowledge will continue to be shared.
