ARTIST STATEMENT
Ngozi Akande is a mixed media artist who utilizes textiles and found objects in her work. She explore different styles and does not limit herself to any particular method because she believes that art is versatile.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Dr. Ngozi Akande, is a prolific Nigerian artist who uses her art as an advocacy for women rights and empowerment. Born in 1965 in Umuahia, Abia State she is a community organizer and a mentor to younger women, children and artists through her art workshops, art competitions and career exposés. She is a 1986 painting graduate of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria, with masters and Ph.D in Art History all from A.B.U, Zaria. She is a Co-founder, past president and secretary of the Female Artists Association of Nigeria,(FEAAN) and past secretary of the Society of Nigerian Artists (SNA), Abuja.
Ngozi served as the host of the International Child Art Foundation art workshop in July 2015 at the World Children Festival at the Ellipse Washington. She also served as the representative of Nigeria, at UNESCO Art For Peace in Andorra (2016). Her work represented Nigeria at UN 75th Anniversary 2020, Member UNESCO Resilient Artists. Her works are in the UNESCO collections in Paris and New York. She is a volunteer with UNESCO “SHEROS” Art competition and has participated in several exhibitions locally and internationally.
Professionally, Ngozi is a Director/Head of the Department of Arts and Craft, National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC) and the Country Representative, Nigeria Art Olympiad. She has received several awards for mentoring women and also promoting visual arts in Nigeria.
