I am often invited to participate in the world of play with my twin four-year olds. They have taught me that toys can be used to communicate feelings or ideas that are difficult with words. I use play-things to consider more adult themes, such as sex, frustration and paranoia.

While the objects of childhood help me to take myself less seriously, they also give me a venue to explore my own conflicting feelings of motherhood.
