oil stick on mat board
32 x 40 in.
My oil stick drawings are about trails I have hiked around the world with my family, so they refer to very special times. Walking the trails step by step is like meditating, which resembles the repetitive strokes of my drawings. The drawings begin with the pure joy of studying the maps we will use on our adventures. Transferring these sensations into art, I remove reference to place and concentrate on the trail lines. I use an opaque projector to put the lines on paper. I then let my imagination take over to surround the map lines with an accumulation of marks, using whatever media feels right. I work to allow my unconscious to “speak.” This actually requires discipline in order not to be dictated to by conscious learned rules of art.
