ARTIST STATEMENT
Must a print be made with ink, dye, hands, paper? I explore these questions in my current practice by working with nontraditional materials in the traditional matrices of papermaking and printmaking. This selection of works transcends the boundaries of two very similar processes, printmaking and photography.
Monument to Nature and Home are two works that share a basis of printmaking but use light as a means of image-making. Monument to Nature is a work that considers nature as our primary mother; it acknowledges the fruit of life by openly interacting with nature without any boundaries. This piece was produced using traditional papermaking matrices and the self-imposed restriction of working only with material I could harvest with my own hands. The paper is made purely with grass, with no sizing or added materials. The process of printing this paper involved a month-long installation where the paper was suspended between two branches. As the days progressed the paper dried, took the shape of the branches, bleached from the sun, tore from the wind and rain, and was splashed with the mud of the ground. As the paper is pulled, a sheet of grass paper is a vibrant, utopian green, yet after this month-long ‘exposure’ the paper was removed from the installation and reveals a print of the weather.
