ARTIST STATEMENT
Remember when you were a child, creating artworks by cutting and pasting? Well, that’s what I do as an adult, and it’s just as fun and satisfying as it was when I was in kindergarten.
“Ms. Potato Head Has a Lot on Her Mind”—Ms. Potato Head is tired of being seen only as Mr. Potato Head’s nagging wife. She has her own dark thoughts to share, thank you very much.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Melanie Deal’s paper collages and mixed-media works incorporate both predictable patterns and unexpected elements. Recent exhibitions include “Don’t ‘Drag’ Me Down: Today’s Battle for Liberation” at Oakton College’s Koehnline Museum of Art (Des Plaines); “Absurdity: In Dada We Trust” and “Tickled Pink,” both at Woman Made Gallery (Chicago); “Eyes Wide Open” at the Oak Park Art League; and “When Homeward You Turn” at Northwestern University’s Dittmar Gallery (Evanston). She lives in Evanston, Illinois.
