Tree For a Nose

You probably guessed from the image and the title that the day I painted this picture was not an especially good day for relationships. Making the picture, however, was interesting.

First I painted the greenery and facial features with watercolor. Next I carefully painted around the watercolor shapes with acrylic paint with gesso added to make it nice and flat. The result did not please me because it brought out the texture of the rough watercolor paper, so I covered the background with tiny acrylic/ gesso dots. Then I painted over the dots to smooth them out a bit.

All things considered, it was a happy day.
