I find that as women age, they appreciate the importance of both seriousness and silliness. I strive to achieve that in my art.

I chose to go back to school for my MFA in my late 30s. I was surprised by all the hype that surrounded the hot young emerging New York MFAs. Although I was in that city making art, I was not one of “them”. So I reacted to a teacher’s comment about how it wasn’t possible to enter the art scene at my age by making a work of art about it. I wrote the word emerging on a canvas in grey hair and hung it in my studio so every time he walked by he would have to see it. – Age: 38
